  • photo: NBCNBC hosted its Upfronts presentation this Monday, and along with the network's fairly awesome announcement that "The Voice" will be returning for a third season in September came the quite un-awesome news that NBC's other, more underrated vocal competition, "The Sing-Off," has been cancelled. It was the day the a cappella music died.

But the show's cast members and diehard fans aren't going without a fight. Judges Ben Folds, Shawn Stockman, and Sara Bareilles, along with host Nick Lachey, all took to their Twitter accounts this week to mobilize viewers to #SaveTheSingOff, and a grass-roots campaign, led by former contestants Street Corner Symphony, is now fully underway.

  • Britney Spears tweets a photo of herself with Demi Lovato and the other "X Factor" judges …Last year on "The X Factor," when contestant Drew Ryniewicz covered Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper," judge L.A. Reid criticized the song choice because he didn't recognize it. Now, ironically, Demi has officially signed on to be an "X Factor" judge for Season 2, according to Deadline.com. That's sure to make for some awkward banter at the judging table, huh?

Yes, following the very polarizing announcement that former "Mickey Mouse Club" tween star Britney Spears has been hired as an "X Factor" judge, it's now official that a Disney starlet who followed in Britney's wake, Demi, has also joined Simon Cowell's cast. (Another Disney princess, Miley Cyrus, was reportedly also in the running for the job--but according to Deadline, Miley turned it down.) Although Demi is an undeniably better singer than Britney, her credibility is still in some doubt here.

First of all, she's only 19 years old, and her debut album only came out four years ago--so she isn't exactly a showbiz veteran with the

  • An inspirational music video set to a Kelly Clarkson hit, made by the young leukemia patients at Seattle Children's Hospital, has taken the Internet by storm, thanks to a tweet from Kelly herself. And it's easy to understand why Kelly (and 1.4 million YouTube viewers, as of this writing) have been so emotionally moved by the clip, which manages to be both heartbreaking and joyful at the same time. As the ward's cancer-stricken children lip-synch and dance in their hospital rooms to "What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)" in the video, Kelly's lyrics take on poignant new meaning, as the pop song transforms from a simple breakup ode into a triumphant anti-cancer anthem.

The video, which is part of Seattle Children's creative arts program and was the idea of 22-year-old leukemia patient Chris Rumble, was uploaded to YouTube on May 6, and two days later, Kelly tweeted a link to it, raving: "Oh my goodness y'all have to see this! It's beautiful! I can't wait to visit these kids and nurses! It's

  • Last night on "American Idol," Hollie Cavanagh went home in fourth place--not exactly a huge surprise, but kudos to her for getting so far, after facing so much adversity on the show. Now we have three very popular contenders left--Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips, and Jessica Sanchez--and it still seems like anybody's game, even though my "The Day After" co-host Matt Whitfield and I do have some preliminary predictions.

  • David performs on "Idol" [photo: Fox]Season 7 "American Idol" champion David Cook returned to the show Thursday night as the musical guest, with frontrunner Phillip Phillips--who has earned some comparisons to David--watching from the sidelines. Backstage after his performance, David spoke to Yahoo!'s Reality Rocks about such comparisons, and about what is known in the "Idol" world as the "WGWG" phenomenon.

"I know that whole 'white guy with guitar' thing exists, and I don't know if I vibe with it," David said, referring to the three winners that followed him (Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, and Scotty McCreery). "To lump people in like that just almost feels a little dismissive. I think Phillip is probably one of the more unique talents that have ever been on the show, and to lump him in with anybody demeans that a bit. I think Phillip's incredible, and that guy could do almost anything and it would work."

  • Hollie Cavanagh totally bucked the odds this season on "American Idol": Despite multiple showings in the bottom three and some especially harsh critiques from the judges, she kept improving week to week, and she eventually made it all the way to fourth place, before being eliminated this Thursday. Speaking to Yahoo!'s Reality Rocks backstage after this week's results show, Hollie seemed to be in good spirits, and proud to have proven so many naysayers wrong.

"I've definitely been fighting through this competition, and I think that's my main thing. I'm blessed to be at this point because people have thought, 'She's not good enough, she's not going to be here,' but I've been getting through each week, and that's something I'm really proud of. I'm proud to be a fighter in this competition," she declared.

  • Hollie says goodbyeIt may have taken 57 minutes of Ryan Seacrest agonizingly dragging out the proceedings, the judges babbling seemingly without a teleprompter, and J.Lo ickily flirting with her boy-toy backup dancer Casper Smart...but eventually on Thursday, Ryan did get around to announcing the "American Idol" result that everyone had been expecting not only all day, but really for weeks now: Hollie Cavanagh was, unsurprisingly, eliminated. Hollie had a pretty good run on "Idol," but after being on the chopping block six times this season (not to mention being sent home during Hollywood Week when she tried out last year), her time was finally up.

  • Last night, "American Idol's" top four finalists sang two songs apiece, and while the first half of the somewhat filler-packed episode started off slow, with "California" songs that really weren't very Californian at all, the second hour was packed with a whole lot of awesomeness--with Phillip Phillips, Joshua Ledet, and Jessica Sanchez all giving their best performances of the entire season.

  • photo: RCA RecordsAdam Lambert's sexual orientation has unfortunately been a focus of media scrutiny ever since he appeared on "American Idol" three years ago, and especially since he came out on the cover of Rolling Stone in June 2009. Until now, the otherwise outspoken Idol has opted not to directly address gay issues in his own music, but on a poignant new track off his excellent sophomore album Trespassing (out May 15), the gay rights anthem "Outlaws Of Love," he tackles some serious topics--on his own terms, and in his own voice. And in an age when the hot-button issue of same-sex marriage is hotter than ever, the song's message could not be better-timed.

In a recent exclusive interview with Yahoo! Music's Reality Rocks about Trespassing, Adam revealed: "When I wrote this song, I was directly referring to the sadness that I felt in taking in the adversity that the gay community faces on every level: marriage, bullying, acceptance of all kinds, our presence in the entertainment community and how that's still up and coming, politics, all of it...I definitely wrote it about my community."

  • Last week on "The Voice," Juliet Simms gave what was undoubtedly THE performance of the entire "Voice" season, when she stunningly covered James Brown's "It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World." And then, lo and behold, last night on rival show "American Idol," star player Joshua Ledet wowed with the same song, and it was HIS best performance of the season as well. Hmmm...was this 'Idol' producer Nigel Lythgoe's sneaky way of throwing down the gauntlet and saying, "Oh yeah, 'Voice'? We can do it better"? You know, I wouldn't put it past the sly old devil.
