11 things you didn’t know about Katy Perry

In honour of the release of Katy Perry's much anticipated movie documentary "Part of Me 3D," here are 11 things that you probably didn't know about the "Teenage Dream" queen.

1. Her real name isn't Katy Perry
Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, she changed her last name to Perry (her mother's maiden name) to avoid being mistaken for the actress Kate Hudson.

2. She was raised in a devout Christian household with two Pastors as parents
In an interview, the "Wide Awake" singer said, "I'm kind of the black sheep in the family and the middle child, which is a great concoction. I respect my parents so much and we really have grown up together in this process and they respect me. They do have moments of rolling their eyes but I think that that's a dynamic that every kid and parent has."

3. The first non-Christian record she heard was Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill"
As the Montreal Gazette reports, in her new film Perry reveals that her musical direction changed "when she went to visit a secular friend and heard Alanis Morissette's 'You Oughta Know.'" She also got the chance to introduce Morissette when she appeared on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," saying, "She is one of the reasons why I became a songwriter."

4. She's best friends with fellow music sensation Rihanna
Admit it, you're jealous.

5. She only canceled one concert during her "California Dreams" tour performing a total of 124 shows
In an interview, the "Part of Me" singer revealed that it wasn't always easy getting up on stage during her tour, saying, "There would be times where literally hours before the show I was like, 'How am I going to do this?' and I would just pray to God to find the strength and I worked it out most of the time."

6. Her first single as Katy Perry wasn't "I Kissed A Girl"
Diehard fans know that Perry's debut single was the track "UR So Gay" with a video featuring a Barbie doll that ends up looking sort of how the singer appears today following her transformation.

7. She was the first woman to have five number one singles from one album
Perry's tracks "California Gurls", "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T." and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," all stemmed from her 2010 album "Teenage Dream" and all reached number one. She is the first artist since Michael Jackson to have five number one songs from a single album.

8. She got her GED and left high school to pursue music
In order to follow her dreams, Perry left high school early, but not before going to the big homecoming dance. "I went to homecoming with a senior and that made me feel really cool 'cause when you catch a senior for homecoming or for prom or whatever it is ... you made it," she told MTV. "So I made it back then, even."

9. She studied Italian opera and a variety of dances like swing, Lindy Hop and the jitterbug
At the age of 9, Perry began studying Italian opera at the Music Academy of the West and also learned the aforementioned dances by going to the Santa Barbara rec hall and learning from seasoned professionals.

10. Two of her early tracks were recorded and released by Kelly Clarkson
While working on an album with famed "Jagged Little Pill" producer Glen Ballard at the age of 17, Perry wrote two songs, "I Do Not Hook Up" and "Long Shot," both of which now appear on Clarkson's album "All I Ever Wanted." When asked by MTV if she had any hard feelings about the "American Idol" using her songs, Perry replied, "I'm so excited. House in Malibu! Thank you, Kelly!"

11. She's featured singing at the end of P.O.D's video for "Goodbye for Now"
P.O.D.'s 2006 single "Goodbye for Now" features backing vocals provided by Perry in the song's closing chorus. Look for her at the end of the band's music video featured below.
