Damian Abraham of Fucked Up reacts to surprising 2012 MuchMusic Video Award nomination

MuchMusic gave a special nod to VJ and host of "The Wedge" Damian Abraham for his band Fucked Up's music video "Queen of Hearts" during the MMVA 2012 nominations.

"It feels really surreal and bizarre to be nominated," Abraham told Yahoo! Canada Music yesterday after the announcement. "Even though I work at the station, I honestly did not expect to be nominated and I would go so far as to say that this is one of those things that I've watched, but never thought I would be nominated for."

Fucked Up is a hardcore punk rock band from Toronto. They won the 2009 Polaris Music Prize for their album "The Chemistry of Common Life" and last December Spin magazine named their third album "David Comes to Life" as the #1 album of 2011.

Appearing in the category of MuchLOUD's Rock Video of the Year, Fucked Up's "Queen of Hearts" is directed by Scott Cudmore and an interesting choice since Abraham is not actually present in the clip.

"Our friend Scott, who I absolutely give credit to making the video and I can say that because I'm not in it, made a brilliant video and it would be just as brilliant, if not more so, without our participation at all," Abraham said. "He got two groups of kids together and created a post-apocalyptic vision and it's one of the videos that I am most proud of being associated with and when I saw it I was blown away."

The lead singer is particularly proud of "Queen of Hearts" because of its artistry, saying, "We've made videos before in the sense that we've gotten live footage and cut it together and we've made videos like one time I got my wife to film me dancing around in a goalie mask to one of our songs, but we've never made a video that was a great work of art."

He praises the director, saying, "I think that Scott, again to his credit and not ours, did that. It's truly his vision and the nomination is beyond flattering and I'm so happy."

Nominated against videos like the Arkells' "Michigan Left," Sam Roberts Band's "I Feel You," The Sheepdogs' "I Don't Know" and Theory of A Deadman's "Chick Came Back," "Queen of Hearts" has some stiff competition at hand but is a strong contender.
