Drake brings home the only 2012 MTV Video Music Award for Canada

Congratulations Drake!

Winning his first Moonman ever, Toronto's very own Drake was the only Canadian artist to emerge victorious during last night's MTV Video Music Awards winning Best Hip Hop Video for "HYFR" featuring Lil Wayne.

The 24-year-old triumphed over artists like Childish Gambino, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z and Kanye West (twice,) with his video that opens with clips of a young Aubrey "Drake" Graham saying "mazel tov" to the camera and highlights his re-commitment to the Jewish religion.

"Well, first of all, obviously gotta thank Lil Wayne because he killed the song. I gotta thank everybody from Young Money, shout out to Toronto, one time!" Drake said during his acceptance speech. "The video, it's about being me. Being black and Jewish. I went to this house party one time, and when I showed up there, it was a bunch of kids and I ended up getting made fun of."

Adding a personal shout out to bullied children everywhere, the rapper said, "I want to dedicate this award to any kid that's ever had a long walk home by yourself, you know what I'm saying? This is to you man for real. We made it."

With this victory comes the realization that this award was only one win out of a possible five. Drake's "Take Care" lost in four other categories and Canadian artists overall did not have a successful evening at this year's MTV VMAs.

Losing out to Chris Brown for Best Male Video and One Direction for Best Pop Video and Most Share-Worthy Video, Justin Bieber walked away empty handed from this year's VMAs and he wasn't the only one to be bested by a boy band.

"Call Me Maybe" hitmaker Carly Rae Jepsen also lost to One Direction in the categories of Most Share-Worthy Video and the coveted, Best New Artist.

As we predicted yesterday, K'Naan's clip "Is Anybody Out There?" featuring Nelly Furtado did not pick up the award for Best Video with a Message but instead of Kelly Clarkson or Gym Class Heroes grabbing the prize like we thought, it went to Demi Lovato's clip for "Skyscraper" instead.
