Fiona Apple’s 23-word album title

She may not be a "criminal," but Fiona Apple is still up to her old tricks.

Aiming for a June release of her much-anticipated fourth studio album, the singer/songwriter has returned to her old ways and given her new record a name that is a bit of a mouthful.

"The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do" is the album title that is making headlines and will undoubtedly be shortened to "The Idler Wheel" when spoken of.

However, even though this album title seems like the longest of its kind, trust me, it's not.

According to Rolling Stone, Apple decided to name her second album after an eight-line poem she wrote in 1999. The poem was an answer to a negative response she received following her appearance in SPIN Magazine. In a 2006 interview for iTunes Originals, she recalls that she wrote the poem after reading the responses to her appearance in SPIN just before heading out on tour.

"I was so stupid. I looked at the letters that people wrote in and not one was good," Apple said. "It was all people talking about how annoying I was, how crazy [I was] and it was just all terrible stuff."

It was well worth any backlash she received because it got her into the Guinness Book of Records.

When it came time to name her second album, Apple took the poem, which was "a little pep talk to [herself]" and used it to her advantage. "I thought that just using 'When The Pawn…' sounded kind of cool and so I put [it] in." She also added, "I got so much crap for [using] a 90-word [title] and of course it stole the thunder of the actual album at first."

Check out the legendary 90-word title below:

"When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king
What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight
And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring
There's no body to batter when your mind is your might
So when you go solo, you hold your own hand
And remember that depth is the greatest of heights
And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land
And if you fall it won't matter, cause you'll know that you're right"

Until 2007, this album name was known as the longest title ever. However, it was overtaken by Soulwax's 103-word album name, "Most of the Remixes..." and subsequently, Chumbawamba's 158-word title, "The Boy Bands Have Won…" in 2008.

Do you think that Apple's 23-word title will once again overshadow the album itself?
