International Women’s Day: The girl power playlist

“All the women who are independent/Throw your hands up at me!”

Happy International Women’s Day, ladies!

Today is all about you and to celebrate a day that has been recognized since Feb. 1909 (moved to March 8 in 1913,) here are six songs dedicated to women everywhere.

1. “Run The World (Girls)” by Beyoncé
It’s hard not to love this Beyoncé track. “Run The World (Girls)” inspires us with strength through its intense drum beats and empowering lyrics. Also, it doesn’t hurt that Beyoncé is a strong role model for “Independent Women” everywhere.

Fierce lyrics: “How we're smart enough to make these millions/Strong enough to bear the children/Then get back to business.”


2. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain
Canadian chanteuse Shania Twain sure seems to like showing the men who’s the boss. This tune is featured on her album “Come On Over,” which is the best-selling female record in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Fierce lyrics: “We don't need romance-we only wanna dance/We're gonna let our hair hang down/The best thing about being a woman/Is the prerogative to have a little fun.”


3. “Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves” by the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin
This powerful, female-friendly tune was covered by artists like Christina Aguilera, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams, Florence Welch and Jennifer Hudson at the at 53rd Grammy Awards in a stunning tribute to Aretha Franklin.

Written by the Eurythmics’ Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart, this track makes you proud to be a woman.

Fierce lyrics: “The ‘inferior sex’ got a new exterior/We got doctors, lawyers, politicians too/Everybody - take a look around/Can you see - can you see - can you see/There's a woman right next to you.”


4. "The Lady Is A Vamp" by the Spice Girls
It’s impossible to have a day about women without mentioning the ambassadors of Girl Power, the Spice Girls.

The tune's “Spiceworld” album cut gives a shout out to some of the most influential women of the past like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Norma Jean (also known as Marilyn Monroe) and Twiggy.

Fierce lyrics: “She's a power girl of the '90s world /And she knows just what to do/Cos' the lady is a vamp, she's a vixen not a tramp.”

5. “Can’t Hold us Down” by Christina Aguilera
Calling out the double standards that exist between men and women, this song gives a voice to the sometimes-unfair treatment of the female sex. You go girl!

Fierce lyrics: “This is for my girls all around the world/Who've come across a man who don't respect your worth/Thinking all women should be seen, not heard/What do we do girls?/Shout out loud!”


6. “I Don’t Need A Man” by The Pussycat Dolls
The Pussycat Dolls know how to celebrate female independence by pointing out that women “don't need a ring around [their] finger to make [them] feel complete.”

Fierce lyrics: “I don't need a man to make it happen/I get off being free/I don't need a man to make me feel good/I get off doing my thing.”
