Juno Awards to call Winnipeg home in 2014

While the 2013 Juno Awards, which will be held in Regina, Sask., are less than 200 days away, the 2014 Canadian music awards ceremony has already named their location and it looks like we are headed to Winnipeg, Man., for the 43rd annual event.

CBC News reports that the formal announcement will be made later today by Manitoba's Premier Greg Selinger and Winnipeg's Mayor Sam Katz. Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce's vice-president, Chuck Davidson, seems pleased with the news.

"What people have to remember is that the Junos isn't just one event," Davidson said, noting that the last time the celebration of Canadian music visited Winnipeg in 2005 the festivities generated $5.5 million. "It's a week … full of events, so there's going to be an impact in terms of hotel stays, in restaurants and hospitality. So this is a big deal."

He also said, "Whether they have concerts, whether they have hockey games with celebrities, whether there's workshops ... there's going to be an impact."

Last year in Ottawa, Juno Week was packed with things to do and see during the day like the celebrity charity hockey game, the Juno Cup, and Juno Fest, which saw our country's capital come alive with Canadian musicians showcasing their talents.

In addition, the 2012 Juno Week featured fan centric activities like Juno Fan Fare, which included an autograph signing session with Canadian artists and the Juno Songwriters' Circle hosted by Juno Award winner Dan Mangan that allowed fans to get up-close and personal with the "Oh Fortune" artist.

Just to refresh your memory, Winnipeg's 2005 show featured performances by Billy Talent, k-os, k.d. lang, Simple Plan and Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee, The Tragically Hip, and was hosted by "Corner Gas" star Brent Butt.

We wonder who the 2014 Juno Awards will get to host and perform when the event reaches Winnipeg, but until then, check out k.d. lang's breathtaking rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" during the 2005 show featured below.
