MuchMusic Video Awards 2012: Our Lady Peace, the forgotten sweethearts of the MMVAs

The year 2003 was a very different time. The final films in both "The Matrix" and "The Lord of The Rings" trilogies were released in theatres, Apple launched its new iTunes Music Store and Britney Spears debuted her fourth studio album, "In The Zone."

It was also the year that Justin Bieber celebrated his ninth birthday and the last year that Toronto's alternative rock band Our Lady Peace won a MuchMusic Video Award.

The last MMVA that Our Lady Peace took home was for their track "Innocent" from the band's fifth studio album "Gravity" in the category of Best Video. The band also performed the song live on air during the 2003 broadcast.

Since then, OLP released their sixth studio effort, "Healthy in Paranoid Times," which produced the single "Angels/Losing/Sleep" that was nominated for People's Choice: Favourite Canadian Group at the 2006 MMVAs, but lost to Simple Plan's "Crazy."

After taking a short hiatus between 2006 and 2009, the band debuted their seventh album "Burn, Burn," which peaked at number three on Billboard's Canadian Albums chart and contained the catchy track, "All You Did Was Save My Life."

This year, OLP came back with a vengeance with their newest disc, "Curve," in April with "Heavyweight" as its first single. The video that accompanied the track was ripe with artistic integrity and pushed boundaries by focusing on a storyline instead of featuring the band in an obvious way. Yet, an MMVA nomination was nowhere to be found when the 2012 contenders were announced.

So, what happened to the band that once held the record for most MMVA nominations? They haven't disappeared into obscurity or offended their public and they are as accessible now, if not more so thanks to social media, than ever before.

Could it be that their fans have now moved on to the likes of bands like the Arkells and The Sheepdogs? Only time will tell, but if their first video "Heavyweight" is any indication of the artistic direction that the band is headed in, then they better get ready to sweep the MMVAs in 2013.
