One Direction suffers backlash for Oasis “Wonderwall” cover song

A rendition of Oasis' iconic track, "Wonderwall," has surfaced online and this time it's not by former band member Liam Gallagher and his new band Beady Eye, but by British boy band, One Direction.

Played with an acoustic guitar while waves crash down around them, One Direction delivers the 1995 track in a squeaky clean manner that seems to signal the impending end of summer.

Fans of 1D have really taken to the cover version by band members Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson and have tweeted comments like, "One Direction - Wonderwall is just so beautiful. Omg. I'm crying at how beautiful their voices are," and, "I'm listening to One Direction sing Wonderwall right noow [sic]. Can't. handle. these. emotions. But seriously though, I'm like crying. #perfect."

However, Oasis fans seem less than impressed with the rendition and have left comments on the clip like, "WHAT THE F-CK?? WHY THE F-CK HAVE THEY RUINED THIS SONG??" and, "To all real music fans remember to hit the dislike button ok?"

In addition to leaving notes like, "What horror! That sucks! What a way to destroy a song! …This cover should never have come to light. One [Direction] should have humility and brains to know that Oasis were too big for them. Guys, being famous does not mean being talented."

This isn't the first time the band has performed a cover song. They were discovered on the UK version of "The X Factor" and have also incorporated renditions of songs such as Natalie Imbruglia's 1997 hit "Torn" into their concerts.

Yet, no cover has received this level of backlash from viewers and the negative comments are only continuing to escalate online with Directioners attempting to fan the fire and defend the band.

What is it about "Wonderwall" that sends fans into a frenzy when anyone other than the original band performs it?
