Patrick Stump defends Nickelback

Canadian rockers Nickelback have dealt with their share of hate in the past but now Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump is coming to their defence.

According to Huffington Post Music Canada, Stump took to his website and issued a post titled “Hey! Don’t You Just Hate That (every) Thing?” that explains the prejudice some people have against others based on their music taste.

“I study other musicians,” he wrote. “I’m always working to improve my abilities as a songwriter or a guitarist or a producer or a programmer or a lyricist, etc. I’m sure Nickelback, at least somewhere in they’re career, are or were no different.”

He also said, “They worked (and potentially still are working) to be the best damned Nickelback they can be. All of the agreed upon pariahs throughout pop-culture history put their identities into the thing we decry.”

Stump then reveals that in the past, both as a solo artist and as part of Fall Out Boy, he’s been rejected by other artists after purposing a working relationship because he believes other bands thought “Oh you guys are lame.” He also admits to "probably unwittingly" treating other musicians the same way.

"But perhaps we as a culture have exhausted (at least for a little while) whatever can positively be gained by ignorantly dismissing things as loudly as we can,” he writes. “I started off talking about Nickelback. I really couldn’t tell you one of their songs. What qualifies me to say I dislike them?”

The post seems to have hit home with a few readers who share Stump’s view of leaving hate behind.

“I don't know anything about you or your music, but this is a great post and you say a lot of things that need to be said,” one reader commented. “…People need to stop being so f--king dismissive. In trying to distinguish themselves from the herd, they actually wind up showing how much they belong to it.”

However, even though it’s a nice gesture, it doesn’t seem like the culture of hating Nickelback can be changed with one blog post as non-fans continue to express their dislike for the group.

“Whoever invented the alarm clock should be slapped across the face,” one hater tweeted on Feb. 28. “You invented the only thing I hate more than Nickelback.”

Wrote another on March 5: “Whoever played 2 nickelback songs in the lunchroom this morning... I hate you.”
