Taylor Swift’s new break-up anthem, who is it about?

Notorious for using her very public past relationships as material for her songs, Taylor Swift has done it again with her new track "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," only this time, we are left wondering who she is actually singing about.

Earlier this year, Swift spoke to Vogue about her upcoming album "Red", and described the record's content, saying, "There's just been this earth-shattering, not recent, but absolute crash-and-burn heartbreak, and that will turn out to be what the next album is about."

She also said, "The only way that I can feel better about myself—pull myself out of that awful pain of losing someone—is writing songs about it to get some sort of clarity."

Since its release earlier this week, fans have been trying to decipher who "Never Ever" is about and have listed Swift's ex-boyfriends like Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Taylor Lautner and Jake Gyllenhaal as suspects.

Clearing his name from the list of possible subjects, Jonas has spoken out about the track and said, "I don't think we've ever tried [to get back together] another time, so I can tell you it's not about me." Adding, "That said, I think the song is great. Taylor does pop music really well and I'm happy for her."

According to celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton, Swift revealed the conception of "Never Ever" and what happened in the studio the day it was written with collaborators Max Martin and Johan Shellback, saying, "Writing 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' was one of the most hilarious experiences I have ever had in the studio because it just happened so naturally."

Detailing the situation, she said, "This guy walks in who is a friend of my ex's and starts talking about how he's heard we're going to get back together and that was not the case. When he leaves, Max and Johan are like, 'so what's the story behind that?' And so I start telling them the story of break up, get back together, break up, get back together, just, ugh, the worst. Max says, 'this is what we're writing. We're writing this song,' and I picked up the guitar and just started singing, 'we are never—' It just happened so fast. It was so much fun."

Given this information, between Mayer, Lautner and Gyllenhaal, who is the most likely candidate to have a friend that frequents recording studios and has the clearance to walk into a recording session with Swift? Obviously, Mayer.

Of course, this is all speculation as Swift has neither confirmed nor denied whom the song is actually about, however, it would be interesting if she decided to take a shot at Mayer again given his recent connection to Katy Perry and how he feels about the last time she wrote about their relationship.

"It made me feel terrible," Mayer told Rolling Stone about his feelings towards Swift's song "Dear John" on her album "Speak Now." "Because I didn't deserve it. I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."

Would it be the perfect crime if the subject of "Never Ever" is actually Mayer since no one would expect Swift to write another song about him so soon and based on his reaction to "Dear John?"

Also, the lyric in "Never Ever" that goes, "And you, would hide away and find your peace of mind/ With some indie record that's much cooler than mine" leads to the further suspicion that the subject is Mayer given his recent hibernation from the world phase and his taste in music.
