Our Lady Peace’s Jeremy Taggart drums for the Heart and Stroke Foundation

As part of their "Be Pulse Aware" campaign, drummer Jeremy Taggart of Our Lady Peace lent his skills to the Heart and Stroke Foundation to demonstrate a heart's rhythm.

Using Taggart as a sonically literal interpretation of a heartbeat, the Heart and Stroke Foundation takes it to the streets in this clever commercial that raises awareness about atrial fibrillation (or AF.) However, as it states in the video's disclaimer, "Taggart's interpretation of this patient's heart function may not be 100% tempo accurate."

In the clip, the drummer follows a patient, who is connected to a heart monitor that allows Taggart to hear his heart's rhythm, and demonstrates the different speeds at which the heart fluctuates during a normal routine.

For the purpose of the demonstration, an irregular drumbeat signifies an irregular heartbeat, which is called AF. Taggart appears alongside the patient as he eats a sandwich, rides an elevator, goes bowling and even falls off his drum kit while the patient plays golf, demonstrating the AF symptom of fatigue.

According to the Foundation's website, symptoms of AF include, "irregular and fast heartbeat, heart palpitations, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, sweating and nausea and light-headedness or fainting."

In addition, the website points out that AF "is the most common type of arrhythmia, affecting approximately 350,000 Canadians" and "individuals with atrial fibrillation have a risk of stroke that is three to five times greater than those without AF."

So, unless you have the luxury of having an experienced drummer follow you around to communicate the fluctuations of your heartbeat to you as you go about your daily routine, you might want to consider paying attention to what your body is telling you.
