Marianas Trench leads the 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards with seven nominations

The MuchMusic Video Awards are set to take over downtown Toronto on June 17 with West Coast bands like Marianas Trench and Hedley leading the nominations this year along with Toronto's very own, Drake.

"I'm thinking that Hedley is going to dominate this year," MuchMusic VJ Lauren Toyota exclusively told Yahoo! Canada Music during yesterday's live announcement. "Their album is fantastic and they deserve all of these awards because they put a lot of work and creativity into their videos especially."

Hedley is currently tied with Drake for five nominations each and appearing in categories like Pop Video of the Year, UR Fave Artist or Group and the coveted, Video of the Year, among others. However, their tally is no match for Marianas Trench's seven nominations.

"They have the most nominations this year, but I don't think that they are going to get all seven," Toyota said. "I think they'll get at least five. My favourite video of theirs is the most recent 'Fallout' and I think it'll win for Post-Production and Cinematography. The video is actually really impeccable and a lot of work went into it."

Hailing from Vancouver, B.C., the punk-pop band consists of members Josh Ramsay, Matt Webb, Mike Ayley and Ian Casselman. They won the MMVA Director of the Year in 2009 for their video "Cross My Heart" and have been nominated for eight previous MMVAs.

Co-hosting this year's show is the always entertaining LMFAO and Toyota has no worries that Redfoo (Stefan Gordy) and SkyBlu (Skyler Gordy) will bring the party rock to the T-Dot, saying, "You can't really find a better co-host than the guys of LMFAO because they are a party." Adding, "In the last year, they've come to define all that is a party, so you know that they are going to throw an amazing block party for the MMVAs."

Toyota is excited to see Katy Perry, the show's first announced performer, and looks forward to the atmosphere that she will create on stage.

"I loved when she showed up with all the candy stuff and she came in on an ice cream truck," the VJ said. "That was her theme with 'Teenage Dream,' but this year, maybe she's going to come out in an army tank with soldiers and even though I have no idea what she's going to do, she's got to top 2010," she said referencing the theme of Perry's "Part of Me" video.

Noticeably low on the nomination scale this year are usual MMVA favourites like Avril Lavigne and Nickelback, who between them have 14 previous wins but only one nomination each this year.

Shockingly, Our Lady Peace's "Heavyweight" did not receive any nominations despite its fan appreciation and the group being one of the most awarded bands in MMVA history.

In addition, Nelly Furtado's "Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)" was able to snag a nomination in the Director of the Year category, even though the clip only premiered a little over a week ago.

Furtado is rumoured to be the next announced performer at this year's MMVAs, but until a formal announcement is made, check out Marianas Trench's multi-nominated video "Fallout" featured below.
