MuchMusic Awards 2012: Justin Bieber brings his brother on the red carpet

The 2012 MuchMusic Video Awards took over Toronto tonight, turning the corner of Queen and John into a veritable celebrity mecca. Some of music's biggest stars descended on the annual award show, including Canadians Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado, and Carly Rae Jepson, as well as hosts LMFAO, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Selena Gomez, and Flo Rida.

While the award show proper features plenty of high profile presenters and impressive musical performances, the real action took place on the red carpet prior to the show. Over the years the MMVA red carpet has become known for its memorable and often over-the-top celebrity arrivals, and tonight's awards were no exception.

Canadian sensation Carly Rae Jepsen kicked off the evening, pulling up in a steel blue convertible being polished by greased up shirtless men. MuchMusic wasted no time giving away the first award of the night, practically throwing a trophy at the "Call Me Maybe" singer moments after she hopped out of her car. Music awards: not just for award shows anymore.

Shortly afterward, Ontario-born pop superstar Justin Bieber arrived sans girlfriend Selena Gomez (she walked the carpet ahead of him). Instead the "Baby" singer brought along an actual baby — his two year old brother Jaxon. The elder Bieber walked the red carpet clutching his younger brother in his arms, stopping to pose for pictures, sign autographs, and chat with MuchMusic VJs. Red carpets like this are old hat for the 18-year-old singer, and the young Jaxon seemed just as unfazed by all the screaming tween girls and flashbulbs. This kid might have a future in the business.

Not to be outdone by the Biebz, songstress Katy Perry arrived with a pint-sized posse of her own. The "I Kissed a Girl" singer was joined on the red carpet by seven young girls dressed as characters from Perry's "Teenage Dream" music videos. The "mini-Perrys", as the pop star described them, looked adorable (though putting breast-shaped cupcakes on the chest of a nine-year-old girl might have been a bad choice), following Perry around the red carpet like ducklings following their mother.

Canadian pop rockers Marianas Trench led the evening with a total of seven nominations, and arrived in a style befitting their status. The "Fallout" quartet pulled up in an inflatable bouncy castle accompanied by stern looking toy soldiers, pouring out of the colourful fortress in full military regalia riding stuffed horses strapped to their waists.

In between the celebrity arrivals and talking heads, Canadian artist Kreesha Turner performed her hit "Rock Paper Scissors" live on the red carpet, accompanied by some hilariously strange S&M dancers rocking leather kilts and black gimp masks. Not exactly the most family friendly performance, but entertaining nonetheless.

This year's MMVA red carpet featured some seriously weird and cringe-worthy stuff, but strangely none of it seemed at all out of sorts for show. Next year's nominees have their work cut out for them — the 2012 MMVAs are going to be hard to top.
