One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” gets an eccentric piano cover

We've already seen what five musicians can do with one guitar after Burlington band Walk Off The Earth covered Gotye's "Somebody That I Use To Know" back in January.

However, check out what happens when five musicians, The Piano Guys, perform One Direction's hit "What Makes You Beautiful" by using almost every inch of a single piano.

"A couple months ago the five of us were gathered round a piano prepping for a video shoot scheduled for that day," the band wrote in the clip's description on YouTube about how they came up with the idea for the performance. "We were brainstorming ideas when one of us (can't remember who!) got off task and starting flicking a piano string."

They also wrote, "Since all of us are poster children for ADHD, it wasn't long before ALL of us had joined in -- banging out a beat, plucking a string, or hitting keys. The brainstorming meeting had been sabotaged beyond repair, but another music video idea was born!"

The Piano Guys, made up of Al van der Beek, Steven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson, Tel Stewart and Jon Schmidt, decided to preform "What Makes You Beautiful" because of its family friendly nature. However, they admit that before they made the video, they considered how the clip might be perceived.

"We thought about the ramifications of taking on a teenybopper boy band tune as five middle-aged married guys who are desperately holding on to their hairlines," the band said. "BUT you know us -- we love a good challenge! This one was so fun to write that the 'challenge' part of it never was felt…After we figured out the main 'techniques' of playing the piano unconventionally we loved experimenting with swapping out chords and throwing the structure of the song around until it clicked."

Going viral with almost 500,000 views in less than 24 hours, The Piano Guys look like they are having a fantastic time in the clip and have the ability to make you smile while watching their joy and excitement as they play One Direction's tune.

Revealing why they look like they are having so much fun, the band says, "We just acted like kids playing a piano and it totally worked!"
