(10/31/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Barry White is currently resting in his Los Angeles home while he awaits a kidney transplant. Last month, people close to the Grammy Award-winning artist announced that White was undergoing dialysis treatment with hopes of stabilizing his condition so that a transplant may take place. Now stabilized, doctors have begun looking for suitable donors, including his children.
This is not the first serious illness White has faced. In 1999, he was hospitalized for hypertension, and doctors believe that his ongoing blood-pressure issues led to his recent kidney failure.
White's manager Ned Shankman told AP, "I see him every day, and he's doing better every day," adding, "He's a candidate for transplant. We're still looking for a match."
White recently signed to the just-launched Def Jam Classics label, and at last report he had been working on two albums. He is best known for the mid-'70s hits "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe" and "You're The First, The Last, My Everything," and for playing himself on a 1993 episode of The Simpsons.
