Cold Says 'Stupid Girl' Started Off As A Joke

(5/8/03, 4 p.m. ET) -- Cold's "Stupid Girl" is at Number 15 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. The song is very Weezer-esque--so much so that Cold invited Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo to track some vocals on it, and he even wound up helping singer/songwriter Scooter Ward with the lyrics.
Cold bassist Jeremy Marshall said that Cuomo's appearance on the track started off as a far-fetched joke. "We called him up. When we wrote the song, you know, we thought, 'Man, this sounds like a Weezer song,'" Marshall said. "So, somebody said as a joke, 'Hey, let's have Rivers sing on it.' And the next thing you know it was actually a reality. And he wrote the verses, and sang on it too. He's got a lot of back-up vocals on the track now too. So, it's cool."
Marshall said that Cuomo might show up at one of Cold's upcoming shows, but the bassist wouldn't say where and when.
Cold will release Year Of The Spider on May 13. The following day it will celebrate with an acoustic set and autograph signing at Tower Records in Sherman Oaks, California.
