Oscar Bids A 'Titanic' Affair

(2/11/98) - The Titanic juggernaut continued during yesterday's nominations for the 70th annual Academy Awards. Titanic captured a record-tying 14 Academy Award nominations (the only other film to receive that many nominations was All About Eve), including Best Picture, Actress and Director.

In the music categories, Best Original Song nominees included "Go The Distance" from Hercules, written by Alan Menken and David Zippel; "How Do I Live" from Con Air, by Diane Warren; "Journey To The Past" from Anastasia, by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens; "Miss Misery" from Good Will Hunting, by Elliott Smith; and "My Heart Will Go On" from Titanic, by James Horner and Will Jennings.

Best Original Music or Comedy Score nominees were Anastasia, Stephen Flaherty, Lynn Ahrens and David Newman; As Good As It Gets, Hans Zimmer; The Full Monty , Anne Dudley; Men In Black, Danny Elfman; and My Best Friend's Wedding, James Newton Howard.

L.A. Confidential and Good Will Hunting each received nine nominations, including Best Picture. The other Best Picture nominees were As Good As It Gets and, in a mild surprise, The Full Monty.

Titanic's Kate Winslet was nominated for Best Lead Actress, as were Helena Bonham Carter in The Wings Of The Dove, Julie Christie in Afterglow, Judi Dench in Mrs. Brown and Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets.

Robert Duvall's self-financed role in The Apostle earned him a Best Lead Actor nomination. He will face Matt Damon from Good Will Hunting, Peter Fonda from Ulee's Gold, Dustin Hoffman from Wag The Dog and Jack Nicholson from As Good As It Gets.

The Academy Awards show will be held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on March 23rd.
