Matthew Good Band Leader Boycotts Juno Awards
01/26/2001 5:00 PM, Yahoo! Music Craig Rosen
(1/26/01, 5 p.m. ET) - The Matthew Good Band's album Beautiful Midnight was released in Canada in late 1999, and it's just now making its way to the U.S., where it will be released by Atlantic Records on Tuesday (January 30). The band and album were just nominated for several Juno Awards (Canada's equivalent to the Grammys), including best album, but don't expect to see Good at the Juno ceremony.
"I don't go--I boycott, actually," the singer-songwriter explained. "We won best rock record last year and best group, and I wasn't there either. I just don't go. It objectifies what... I didn't get into this to win shiny little trophies to prove that we did it. I got into it and do it because that's what I want to do. I don't think you can take art and particularly objectify it and say one thing is better than another. It's just all about television, and with all the poor programming that's on TV in general, you'd think they'd come up with something better than an awards show."
The same can't be said for the band's guitarist, Dave Genn, who told LAUNCH, " I go because the bar is open. The bar is open, and I have a good ol' time."
The band's first single in the U.S.-"Hello, Time Bomb" from Beautiful Midnight - is racing up the Modern Rock chart and is currently Number 38.
