Offspring Album Appears On Napster

(10/25/00, 7 a.m. ET) - The Offspring initially wanted to make their November 14 release Conspiracy Of One available as free downloads on its website, but the band's record company, Sony, nixed the idea. Sony did agree to a $1 million give-away tied into the download of the single "Original Prankster," but now the entire album has turned up on Napster and at least one Offspring fan site.
Singer/songwriter Dexter Holland told LAUNCH his feelings about the issue: "Our intention was to put something up on our own website, which we did with 'Original Prankster,' got the single up, which I think is gonna represent 90 percent of the downloading anyway, just the single," he said. "Because we're putting up something on the website, we can still have our $1 million giveaway, which is important. And really, the last thing is, we knew it was gonna end up on Napster, the whole record at the same time anyway. So if people want to go out and find it, they can. If anything, I think we got the word out on that. So I think we got the word out pretty well."
