(10/30/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Call it revenge of the N.E.R.D. The performing and recording arm of the hot production duo the Neptunes took home the Shortlist Prize on Tuesday (October 29) during the event's second annual ceremony at the Henry Fonda Theatre in Hollywood.
Frontman Pharrell Williams accepted for the group, which won the honor along with a cash prize of $3,000 sponsored by Tower Records and a $3,000 gift certificate to the Guitar Center chain of stores for musicians.
Williams said his partner Chad Hugo was "locked up," but judges Mos Def and Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson filled in for an onstage version of "Rock Star," from N.E.R.D.'s album In Search Of, which has gone gold for sales of 500,000 copies.
Other performers for the night included Cee-Lo, DJ Shadow, and an all-star aggregate featuring judge Iggy Pop along with Pete Yorn on drums, ex-Minutemen/Firehose member Mike Watt on bass, and the Hives' "Howlin" Pelle Almqvist and Mike Vigilante on guitars.
The prize-bestowing celebrity panel also included Beck, U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr., Metallica 's Lars Ulrich, members of the Strokes, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge), and the Roots, who all voted on the winner an hour prior to the concert event and ceremony.
N.E.R.D.'s album won over nominated releases by the Hives, Bjork, the Avalanches, Zero 7, the Flaming Lips, Aphex Twin, the Doves, DJ Shadow, and Cee-Lo.
The Shortlist Organization was founded in 2001 to recognize outstanding artistry outside the mainstream.
