Tool More Intimate Than Britney!

(4/19/01, 12 p.m. ET) -- The notoriously press-shy Tool took time to answer fans' questions about its May 15 release Lateralus in a webcast on Tuesday (April 17).
One of the 38 questions posed to the band via an electronic/robotic sounding female voice asked if the songs on Lateralus are more about personal relationships. Singer-lyricist Maynard James Keenan responded, "All the songs we've ever done have been about relationships; just because the relationship is between larger bodies of people or someone's perspective on what's happening in the world or whatever, it's still a relationship. It still affects you as an individual, and intimately. So, hard question to answer, I guess. Yeah, these are definitely about more intimate personal relationships than, say, a Britney Spears album..."
Another member of Tool expanded on the purpose of Lateralus. "We're not writing pop songs, there's nothing we're trying to top. It's just exploring music and going to places we haven't gone or thought of."
