(1/21/98) - Capitalizing on the hype surrounding this Summer's second annual Lilith Fair tour, this June the Razor & Tie record label will join forces with Rolling Stone magazine to release Rolling Stone's Women In Rock Collection, an impressively extensive three-CD set that'll chronicle women in rock 'n' roll from the '50s to the '90s. Disc One will feature classic tracks by the likes of Carole King, Aretha Franklin, Laura Nyro, Joan Baez, Janis Joplin, the Supremes and Patsy Cline, among others. The '80s-leaning Disc Two will include the Pretenders, the Eurythmics, the Go-Go's, Kate Bush, Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, Tina Turner and more. Finally, the Lilith-friendly third disc will boast '90s women folksters like Jewel, Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow, Joan Osborne, Melissa Etheridge, Suzanne Vega and, of course, Sarah McLachlan, as well as urban divas like Salt 'N Pepa, Queen Latifah and even Madonna. All three volumes also feature some surprising, left-field entries, like Nico, X-Ray Spex, PJ Harvey and Sonic Youth, to round things out. Proceeds from the sale of Women In Rock will benefit breast cancer research. Fans will be able to place advance orders for the CD set via a 1-800 number or mailorder starting in March.
