(10/13/99, 1 p.m. PDT) - Silverchair went into the Australian Record Industry Assn. (ARIA) Awards Tuesday night (Oct. 12) with eight nominations, but walked out with just two awards. The band was named artist of the year, while Neon Ballroom producer Nick Lunay picked up an award for his engineering work with Silverchair and Primary. Silverchair were scooped by the Brisbane-based hard rock outfit Powderfinger, who took home awards for album of the year, best rock album, and best cover art for their third album, Internationalist, as well as record of the year for the single "The Day You Come." Natalie Imbruglia was given the outstanding achievement award for sales of more than 5 million copies of Left Of The Middle, the 1998 album that garnered her six awards at last year's ceremony. Other familiar names to pick up trophies included You Am I lead singer Tim Rogers, who picked up the best male artist award; and Savage Garden grabbed best pop release honors for "The Animal Song" from the soon to be released Affirmation.
