(8/26/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- Simple Plan and Fountains Of Wayne will take part in a free pre-MTV Video Music Awards "Blast Off" concert series Tuesday (August 26) at Rumsey Playfield in New York City's Central Park. Simple Plan drummer Chuck Comeau told LAUNCH that the band took whatever it could get when it came to the MTV Video Music Awards.
"Well you know what? We asked MTV to be on their big awards show, and they said no," Comeau explained. "We asked them to be on the pre-show and they said no. They had cooler people like Sean Paul and Black Eyed Peas."
MTV eventually found a simple solution for Simple Plan. Comeau and guitarist Sebastian Lefebvre told LAUNCH that MTV came through with the 'Blast Off' Concert series.
"They were nice enough to organize an event just for us. Live and free in Central Park and it's the MTV 'Blast Off' Concert," Comeau said. "I think they do it in a bunch of different cities and they have like different nominees playing free shows, which is a really cool concept."
Meanwhile, Fountains Of Wayne are getting a lot of attention for their hit single, "Stacy's Mom," from their latest album Welcome Interstate Managers. The video for "Stacy's Mom," stars supermodel Rachel Hunter. Comeau told LAUNCH that Simple Plan is looking forward to performing with Fountains Of Wayne--and have just one request for their co-headliners. "I hope they bring Stacy's Mom too--that would be nice," Comeau said. "Yeah, It's a free show. You can all come out and check it out. It's kind of rad to be playing a free show in New York."
Fountains Of Wayne will soon head to Seattle to play a show, which will be taped for broadcast on VH-1.
Fountains Of Wayne are playing a few dates in Japan starting October 1 and will be performing with Matchbox Twenty in Atlantic City, New Jersey on October 17.
