(2/26/03, 5 p.m. ET) -- Limp Bizkit singer Fred Durst has announced intentions to help out Great White and the members of the Rhode Island community that lost loved ones in the blaze at local club the Station on February 20.
"I really feel bad about what just happened at the Great White concert and I'm working on putting together a benefit for that," Durst said. "Because I think it's our responsibility to provide a safe place for people to be there."
Durst added on the Limp Bizkit website, "It feels right to get involved because I am a musician, I love music, and I love going to concerts. That could have been any of us! Fortunately it wasn't, and we can come together [not only] to help, not only cause awareness to prevent anything like this again, but to help the people who are sincerely hurting from their loss. If you feel the same, then please call (310) 865-7671, and let the world know how you can help."
Durst knows how the members of Great White feel. During Bizkit's Big Day Out performance in January 2001, an 18-year-old girl suffered a heart attack after she was caught in a crush of fans. She died two days later. Durst has made crowd safety a priority ever since.
In light of the Great White pyrotechnics tragedy, Durst was asked if he'll stay away from the hot stuff on the Summer Sanitarium tour with Metallica and the band's forthcoming headlining tour. "I'll probably use more pyro than I've ever used in my life on this one," noted the vocalist.
Limp Bizkit's new album, Bipolar, is slated for release in April.
