The Cult Helps Econoline Crush 'Make It Right'

(5/20/01, 10 a.m. ET) -- Econoline Crush vocalist Trevor Hurst called on his producer friend Bob Rock and members of the Cult to complete the band's new single, "Make It Right." Hurst told LAUNCH the song from the band's new album, Brand New History, was initially headed for the scrap heap.

"That song looked like it wasn't going to make the cut, and I was kind of bummed because I really liked the guitar riff. I thought this was a really strong riff," he said.

Then Hurst decided to phone Rock, who was working with the Cult on its forthcoming album Beyond Good And Evil in Maui. "I phoned Bob Rock and I said, 'I know you're busy, Bob, but I need you to listen to this because I think we're missing it on this song,'" Hurst said. "I send him the tapes, he's listening to it, the guys in the Cult listen to it and they're like, 'Wow, this is an amazing song. Who's this?' And they tell 'em, and I know Billy Duffy and Matt Sorum from L.A. Next thing you know, those guys are in a room re-recording it. Because in Bob's mind, he said, 'You know what? The song is there, it's just... you guys are going crazy. You're trying to cover too many bases. Just get back to the meat and potatoes of it.'"

The Rock-produced track worked, and "Make It Right" is steadily climbing up the Radio & Records Active Rock chart. Brand New History was released May 15.
