(2/29/00, 4 p.m. ET) - Garth Brooks and Don McLean have reunited on the new PBS special Don McLean: Starry, Starry Night. The program, which was filmed in Austin, Texas and also features Nanci Griffith, airs on PBS this month as part of the March 2000 pledge drive (check local listings for information). Brooks's performance on the special will only be available for purchase as part of the PBS pledge drive and will not be included on the retail video or album project. The two first teamed up for Brooks's historic 1997 Central Park concert where they closed the show with "American Pie." McLean shared his thoughts on Brooks with LAUNCH. "He's very humble. He really is. He loves music. He has his own fantasy world that fuels his career but he has an enormous amount of energy and ambition. He's very brilliant. He really is. We have a lot of folks that come out of Oklahoma and Texas, whatever, he's like Gene Autry really, in a lot of ways," McLean added. "He's got that gift that Autry had. I'm sure Garth will end up owning a baseball team some day like Gene Autry did." McLean's "American Pie" is currently enjoying renewed attention thanks to Madonna's hit cover of the song, which is featured on Next Best Thing soundtrack. -- Jennifer Gerlock, Nashville and Gary Graff, Detroit
