(4/29/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- Queen Latifah might not have won an Academy Award, but she landed another honor: "Entertainer Of The Year." The actress/rapper nominated for an Oscar for her role in Chicago will be recognized at the 16th Annual Essence Awards in June.
Essence magazine said readers chose Latifah to receive the award because she means so much to black women.
The magazine's editorial director, Susan L. Taylor, said, "As a multi-talented, creative force, Queen Latifah embodies the spirit of African-American women."
In 2002, Janet Jackson was named the first-ever "Entertainer Of The Year" at the awards.
The show will be taped June 6 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood and the awards will air June 27 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
