Eagle-Eye Cherry's 'Save Tonight' Is Prophetic(8/19/98, 12 p.m. PDT) - In a recently exclusive myLAUNCH chat, up-and-coming artist Eagle-Eye Cherry revealed that "Save Tonight," which is currently No. 23 with a bullet on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, is prophetic. "When I wrote it, I wasn't leaving home as much as I am [now]," he said. "The irony is, the more success the song brings, the more my life becomes the song."
The artist, who is happy to talk about his late father Don Cherry and sister Neneh Cherry (myLAUNCH, 7/24), also said that he doesn't mind comparisons to Lenny Kravitz and Ben Harper. "Two great artists, so I don't mind getting compared to them," he said. "But of course I feel like what I'm doing is different, but don't we all?"
During the chat, which was held on August 14, just hours before Cherry made his American television debut on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, the singer-songwriter admitted he was nervous. "Most definitely," he said. "But as we've been rehearsing, it feels better and better."
Cherry also revealed that he would love to go on tour with the Dave Matthews Band and his dream backing band. "I'd get John Bonham [of Led Zeppelin] on drums, Jimi Hendrix on guitar...it would be a weird band."
