(8/3/99, 1 a.m. PDT) - Promoting a new album can be exhausting: just ask soul legend Barry White, who has been forced to cancel the first leg of his U.S. tour due to exhaustion.

White, who is promoting his new album--ironically titled Staying Power--was admitted to the Scripps Institute on Monday (Aug. 2), following orders from his doctor. After leaving the facility, he will spend the next few weeks at his home in San Diego resting, according to a statement released by Private Music/ Windham Hill, his record label.

"I'm taking my doctor's advice and taking it easy for a few weeks. The last thing I want to do is inconvenience those who have put so much hard work into the tour or to disappoint any of my fans," White said in a statement. "I hope to be able to give 110% as soon as I can."

White's tour is now set to begin on Sept. 10 in Boston. All dates on the East Coast will remain as scheduled, including Sept. 10, Boston; Sept. 11, Wantagh, N.Y.; Sept. 12, Washington, D.C.; Sept. 14, Chicago; Sept. 17, Atlanta; Sept. 18, Greensboro, N.C.; and Sept. 19, Philadelphia.

The list of canceled dates includes Aug. 5, Concord, Calif.; Aug. 6, San Francisco; Aug. 8, Anaheim, Calif.; Aug. 10, Dallas; Aug. 11, New Orleans; Aug. 13, Detroit; and Aug. 14, Nashville.

White's management is hoping to reschedule these shows, which were to be co-headlined with Earth, Wind & Fire, at a later date.
