Freddy Fender Faces Liver Transplant After Hepatitis C Diagnosis

(11/20/00, 5 p.m. ET) - Grammy Award-winner Freddy Fender was recently diagnosed with hepatitis C, a viral infection of the liver, and is currently undergoing a series of dialysis treatments in Corpus Christi, Texas. The performer is being evaluated for a liver transplant, which is necessary for a full recovery. According to a spokesperson for Fender, the singer will continue to perform on weekends and select dates while a donor is being located.
Fender is best known for such hits as "Wasted Days And Wasted Nights" and "Before The Next Teardrop Falls."
