(12/4/01, 12 p.m. ET) -- Rayvon is hoping that the Billboard Music Awards provide overdue recognition for the success of Shaggy's multiplatinum Hotshot album. LAUNCH asked Rayvon, who performs on Hotshot's chart-topping duet "Angel," why he thought the album didn't earned more trophies at other awards shows held earlier this year.
"Well, you know, that's, that's a very good question," he said. "That's a very good question. You know, I think it's a lot of politics involved, you know, behind the scenes. And I really don't know why it didn't get the justice that, you know, I think it deserved, because I don't think nobody sold more records than Shaggy this year."
He added, "I hope it's different within the Billboard Awards and other awards shows to come up, but what happened with the MTV and others, I really don't know. I'm shocked--not even a nomination--but, you know, we don't worry about that because we love doing this and we love the music and we're gonna keep coming. And if we get awards with it, that's good, but we're gonna keep doing it."
Shaggy, whose Hotshot album has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide to date, will perform "It Wasn't Me" with his other popular singing partner, Ricardo "RikRok" Ducent, at the Billboard Music Awards, which will broadcast live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas tonight (December 4) on the Fox network.
Rayvon won't be seen on the awards show, but he did perform "2 Way"--the single from his forthcoming album, My Bad--at the Billboard Bash, a pre-awards-show party at Studio 54 at the MGM Grand last night (December 3). Shaggy and RikRok, who are featured on "2 Way," joined Rayvon during the performance.
Rayvon spent last week in front of the Soul Train cameras. The show will feature him performing "2 Way" and "My Bad" when the 1000th episode of Soul Train airs January 5. Rayvon's album My Bad is scheduled for release a little more than a month later on February 12.
