B.B. King And Keb' Mo' Win Big At Handy Awards

(5/28/99, 1 p.m. PDT) - B.B. King and Keb' Mo' were among the multiple winners at the 20th W.C. Handy Blues Awards held Thursday (May 27) night at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, Tenn. The legendary King won blues entertainer of the year and contemporary blues album of the year for his Blues On The Bayou. Keb' Mo' was named contemporary blues male artist and acoustic blues artist of the year, while his "Soon As I Get Paid," co-written with John Lewis, was selected as blues song of the year. Other artists picking up a pair of awards included Susan Tedeschi, Etta James, and Robert Lockwood Jr..Tedeschi was honored as best new blues artist and contemporary blues female artist of the year. James took the honors for female artist of the year and soul/ blues album of the year for her Life, Love & The Blues. Lockwood was honored for traditional blues album of the year for his I Got To Have Me A Woman and named traditional blues male artist of the year. Also honored was Koko Taylor, whose win as traditional blues female artist of the year gives her a total of 18 career Handy Awards, tying a record set by Buddy Guy. Features on B.B.
