Shaggy And Destiny's Child Among World Music Award Winners

(3/8/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Shaggy and Destiny's Child were among the winners at the 14th annual World Music Awards ceremony at Monte Carlo's famous Sporting Club in Monaco on Wednesday (March 6). Shaggy picked up awards for male artist, reggae artist, R&B male artist, and American artist. Shaggy also co-hosted the ceremony alongside Atlantic Records recording artist Mark McGrath of Sugar Ray, and actress and Jive Records recording artist Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Destiny's Child earned three awards: world artist/group, pop group, and R&B artist/group. Enrique Iglesias won for pop male artist and Latin male artist, while Dido took home awards for pop female artist and adult contemporary artist. Disco diva Gloria Gaynor was received this year's Legend Award from Prince Albert of Monaco, and she also performed her legendary dance anthem, "I Will Survive."

The World Music Awards, which honor the best-selling recording artists from around the world, will air on the ABC in the U.S. on a date that is still to be determined. It will mark the 10th anniversary of the show airing on ABC.

The producer of the annual event, Gary L. Pudney, told LAUNCH that once the show is telecast to a global audience it tends to affect music sales, which in turn has an impact on chart positions. "What usually happens when these artists come and do their records, you will notice a very fast increase in their positions on the charts. The show is shown in 162 countries around the world. It's the only music show that's shown in China and Russia. We reach an audience of over a billion viewers with the World Music Awards, so it's a very, very well watched show around the world," he said.

The World Music Awards are based on sales figures supplied by the International Federation Of The Phonographic Industry. The awards honor the world's top-selling recording artists of the year in the various categories, and the best-selling recording artists of the year from the major record buying countries around the world. Proceeds from all ticket sales to the World Music Awards benefit the Princess Grace Hospital and the Monaco Aide And Presence Foundation.
