The Cult Hits With 'Gone In 60 Seconds' Song

(6/12/00, 3 p.m. ET) - The The Cult, recently reunited and recording a new album with Foreigner's Mick Jones producing, raised a lot of eyebrows this spring when it recorded "Painted On My Heart," a song for the just-opened Nicolas Cage film Gone In 60 Seconds. It was a surprise because the song was written by Diane Warren, who's known mostly for her middle-of-the-road ballads for the likes of Celine Dion and other pop singers, although Aerosmith had considerable success with Warren's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" from the Armageddon soundtrack. Jones tells LAUNCH that he understands why the group recorded the song but that fans should still expect a hard-rocking Cult album to follow. "Before I arrived, they recorded the theme song for the new Nicolas Cage movie. I think that's an attempt by the record company to get their name swirling around. I don't really have an opinion on that," he says with a laugh. "As I say, that was pre- my involvement." Gone In 60 Seconds, which co-stars Angelina Jolie and Robert Duvall, was the Number One film in the country over the weekend, grossing $25.5 million. -- Gary Graff, Detroit
