(7/29/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind kick off an extensive tour together on Monday (July 29) at the Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix. The veteran modern rock hitmakers will be joined by successful newcomer Vanessa Carlton on the trek, which includes 32 shows through mid-September.
The Goo Goo Dolls are on the road in support of their latest album, Gutterflower, while Third Eye Blind will presumably be test driving songs from its third album, Crystal Baller, due this fall. Goo Goo Dolls frontman Johnny Rzeznik told LAUNCH how he recorded "Big Machine," the second and latest single from Gutterflower. "I was sitting at home with a drum machine, and I broke two strings off my guitar, and then I detuned my guitar with four strings on it and just started playing this riff to a canned disco beat. I called the song, 'The Disco Song' for about two months and then it became 'Big Machine,'" he said.
The Goo Goo Dolls are scheduled to perform "Big Machine" on CBS's The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn on August 2.
Carlton, meanwhile, begins the tour as the current best seller of the trio--her gold-certified debut album, Be Not Nobody, checks in at Number 30 on the latest Billboard 200 album chart, or 114 places better than the Goo's Gutterflower.
