Shaggy Gets 'Freaky,' Performs At 'Teenapalooza' Taping

(6/14/01, 1 p.m. ET) -- Shaggy is one of numerous musicians performing at the Teenapalooza taping tonight (June 14) at the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater in Virginia. The reggae-pop superstar is scheduled to perform his hit single, "Angel." He will be joined by Sisqo, Dream, Nelly, Eden's Crush, City High, Uncle Kracker, Lil' Bow Wow, Mandy Moore, and O-Town for the recording of the summer-concert special, which will air from 8-10 p.m. ET June 20 on Fox.

Shaggy is also making the rounds to promote "Freaky Girl," the latest single from his sextuple-platinum album, Hotshot. Shaggy explained to LAUNCH what "Freaky Girl" is all about.

"'Freaky Girl' is one of them songs that basically everybody--I don't care how much they don't want to admit it--likes a little bit of freakiness every now and then in their life, you know what I'm saying? Now if a man can have a chick that's his wife and she's his business partner, and she can be his spiritual companion and then be his freak at the same time, he's a lucky damn man," he said.

Shaggy and 19-year-old singer-songwriter Krystal are currently traveling across North America on the Backstreet Boys Black & Blue world tour. The two will open for the Backstreet Boys Friday (June 15) at the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Virginia.

This summer is not the first time that Shaggy and the Backstreet Boys have shared a stage. In the early '90s, the Boys opened for Shaggy on several European dates. "They were some little kids who were pretty much struggling," recalled Shaggy. "Nobody knew them in America, but I had 'Oh, Carolina,' which was a huge hit over there, and they were kind of just starting. It was a festival and I was the closing band, and they performed a couple of bands before me." Shaggy is also scheduled to perform on for NBC's Today Show Concert Series on July 6.
