Beck & Pete Yorn Make Surprise Appearances At 'Sounds Eclectic'

(11/25/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Beck and Pete Yorn made surprise appearances as special guests during Saturday's (November 23) "Sounds Eclectic Evening" at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, presented by local radio station KCRW.

Beck stepped on stage to join current tourmates from the Flaming Lips, Wayne Coyne and Steve Drozd, already vamping on guitars. The trio offered up loose versions of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You (Babe)," as "I Got You, Beck"; and Willie Nelson's and Waylon Jennings's "Good Hearted Women." On the latter song, Coyne did most of the singing, since Beck didn't appear to know the lyrics.

Beck continued with a triad of duets, joining English singer-songwriter Beth Orton, Norah Jones, and Sia Furler of the British group Zero 7, who each performed sets of their own during the concert.

Using a hand-written lyric sheet placed on the floor, which Beck called "white trash teleprompters," he sang the Rolling Stones' "No Expectations" with Orton and the Everly Brothers' "Sleepless Nights" with Jones.

Hinting at the number he'd chosen to do with Furler, Beck said, "I'm John Travolta, she's Olivia Newton John." The pair then played a ballad version of "You're The One That I Want," from Grease, to loud crowd whoops and applause.

Yorn played a short acoustic set that included his song "Just Another," from his 2001 Columbia debut, Musicforthemorningafter and "Surrender" from his forthcoming second album.

Also appearing at the concert were Aimee Mann, the Mexican dance-rock band Kinky, Ramsey Midwood, and the rap group Blackalicious.
