(6/28/02, 1 p.m. ET) -- Timothy White, Billboard magazine's editor-in-chief, died of an apparent heart attack at the magazine's New York offices on Thursday afternoon (June 27). White, 50, was known for his weekly column, titled "Music To My Ears," and he also authored acclaimed biographies of James Taylor, the Beach Boys, and Bob Marley.

White collapsed in an elevator shortly before 3 p.m. ET, after returning from lunch with a longtime friend. He was rushed to Manhattan's St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The music veteran got his start at AP and spent time at Rolling Stone before coming to Billboard in 1991 as editor-in-chief.

Tommy Mottola, Sony Music's head honcho, said of White, "Integrity and credibility were the core of his essence, and the flavor and editorial style he brought to our industry's premiere magazine will remain indelible."

White is survived by his wife Judy and their twin 10-year-old sons, Christopher and Alexander.
