(11/20/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Erykah Badu and Common's collaboration, "Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip-Hop)," is at Number Three on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The song is an extension of Common's 1994 classic "I Used To Love H.E.R." from his Resurrection album.
Common said it was Badu's idea to write the song, which that appears on the soundtrack for the film, Brown Sugar. "She saw a screening for the movie and decided to write something about hip-hop and love, similar to the way I did 'I Used To Love H.E.R.,' but from a woman's perspective," Common said. "She sang it, and it sounded fresh. She rocked clever terms, and then said, 'Yo, you want to get on the song.' And I said, 'Definitely.' I was honored to be on it."
Common admitted that he initially had reservations about recording another version of the song. "At first, I thought it would be a run down subject," Common said. "But the way she did it was so fresh. I was like, 'Yo. I like it.'"
Common's new album, Electric Circus, is due out on December 10 on MCA Records.
