Lollapalooza Cancels Syracuse Date

(7/18/03, 7 a.m. ET) -- Lollapalooza has cancelled its July 26 date at Vernon Downs race track, just outside of Syracuse, New York because of slow ticket sales. In a summer that's seeing many tours struggle to sell tickets, Lollapalooza has now been bitten twice.
The festival's opening date in Ionia, Michigan on June 3 was also cancelled. The Lollapalooza line-up was thought to be a strong one with headliners Jane's Addiction, Audioslave, Incubus and the Donnas, among others.
An official statement said: "Due to the costs of production versus the estimated ticket sales of 15,000, it did not make fiscal sense to play this date. Unfortunately, the venue is such that Lollapalooza would have needed to bring in additional production facilities, which made the cost to produce the Syracuse-area show significantly more than other venues on the tour."
As of Wednesday (July 16), a spokesperson for Vernon Downs said that only 4,000 tickets for the event had been sold.
On a positive note, Lollapalooza did add a date at the end of the tour. Lollapalooza now closes August 24 in Portland, Oregon.
