(9/1/03, 12 p.m. ET) -- Bringing Down The House ruled the DVD and video rental roost for the third week in a row. The Steve Martin/Queen Latifah comedy was the Number One rental on both charts, with $4.63 million in DVD receipts and another $2.52 million on video. It's been the Number One movie rental since it was released on August 5.
Another Queen Latifah movie, Chicago, came in a close second on DVD with $4.21 million in earnings. It didn't fare quite as well on video though--both the Chris Rock comedy, Head Of State, and the military assassin gone mad tale, the Hunted, beat out the best picture winner for their respective second and third place spots on the VHS rental chart.
Even before its successful theatrical and home video run, Queen Latifah predicted Bringing Down The House would tickle the funny bone. "We think that it's a comedy--it's meant to be laughed at, not taken too seriously, anyway," Latifah said. "You know, it's almost like you gotta give the audience permission to go to the movie and laugh. Just go watch it and laugh 'cause it's funny as hell, and I'm willing to bet on the fact that you will laugh if you do go see it."
