Britney Spears, Fiona Apple, Cher, And Celine Dion Make Mr. Blackwell's List

(1/12/00, 4 p.m. ET) - Britney Spears, Fiona Apple, Cher, and Celine Dion appear on Mr. Blackwell's "Worst-Dressed Women of 1999" list, but it was Cher's negative fashion sense that was "strong enough" to claim the top spot. The legendary singer -- who is nominated for three awards (including record of the year) at the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards -- was singularly dishonored by Blackwell, a former fashion designer who annually pens a column for a supermarket tabloid. "A million beads and one overexposed derriere," stated Blackwell. "When it comes to picking the ultimate fashion fiasco, ladies and gentlemen, it's Cher." Cher wasn't the only musical artist to receive a citation from the self-appointed head of the fashion police. Fiona Apple (No. 5 on the list) was described as a "kinked and curled Kewpie Doll wrapped in a collection of yesterday's fatal fashion frights." Of teen queen Britney Spears (No. 6), Blackwell claimed, "This belly-baring songbird is better heard than seen." No. 2 Celine Dion's "heart will go on" despite Blackwell's references to her as a "profusion of confusion." Third place Queen Elizabeth II followed Dion, and Martha Stewart landed in fourth place. Sex And The City's Sarah Jessica Parker was listed at No. 7, Friends star Jennifer Aniston at No. 8, Cameron Diaz (Any Given Sunday) at No. 9, and country crooners the Dixie Chicks rounded out the top 10. With the sole exception of Barbra Streisand, the music industry didn't fare well on Blackwell's "Best-Dressed of 1999" list. However, Blackwell did have some nice things to say -- he declared that Gwyneth Paltrow, Sophia Loren, Oprah Winfrey, Camryn Manheim (The Practice), Streisand, Halle Berry, Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, and Princess Caroline of Monaco were all "fabulous fashion independents" in 1999. -- Jason Gelman and Art Smith, New York Got news tips, comments, or questions?
