(2/3/99, 1 a.m. PST) - Cake is a staple of every Bar Mitzvah menu, but guests at the party thrown in honor of Mitchell Schops's entrance into manhood not only got to eat cake, they got to see it perform. Cake, the band whose Prolonging The Magic has been certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies, performed Saturday at Schops's Deerfield Beach, Fla. Bar Mitzvah reception after receiving a note from the honoree. In his note, Schops wrote, "Dear Cake, It's me Mitchell again from Florida. I wrote to you guy's once before." He went on to write, "I like your music so much I would appreciate if you could perform at my Bar Mitzvah...I hope you can perform...If you can't, I understand." The Cake fan concluded his request by asking for an autographed picture of the band. In what Schops called his "dream come true," the band performed a short set that included such modern rock hits as "The Distance" and "Never There." The latter track is currently No. 3 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart. Following the Bar Mitzvah gig, Cake has gone on to play some more traditional venues. On Thursday the band will be at the Aerial Theatre in Houston. To read a feature on Cake, click here. Got news tips, comments, or questions? Send them to newstips@mylaunch.com.
