(10/16/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Global pop phenomenon Kylie Minogue and alternative rockers Silverchair were the big winners at Australia's 16th Annual ARIA Awards, held Tuesday (October 15) at Sydney's Superdome.
Minogue picked up four awards, plus an additional special honor from the Australian Record Industry Association. The 34-year-old Aussie pop phenomenon won biggest-selling single and single of the year for "Can't Get You Out Of My Head," and biggest-selling album and best pop release for Fever. She was also presented with an outstanding achievement award.
Silverchair won three awards, including best group; and its album Diorama won best rock album. The group was also chosen as artist of the year in a fan-voted award. The band's album scored three other previously announced honors several weeks ago, for best cover art, producing, and engineering.
Alternative country artist Kasey Chambers took home three ARIAs--best female performer, and her album Barricades And Brickwalls was named album of the year and best country album.
Garage-rockers the Vines took home best new artist in the single division for their hit "Get Free."
In addition, Olivia Newton-John was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame.
Silverchair gave its first live performance in six months at the show, since singer-guitarist Daniel Johns is still battling severe arthritis. The band played "The Greatest View" from Diorama. Johns thanked fans for get-well cards and also thanked his family and "beautiful girlfriend," Natalie Imbruglia, who was in the audience.
Other performers at the event included Chambers, Holly Valance, Alex Lloyd, Grinspoon, and Motor Ace.
