Singer Terri Clark to Join Grand Ole Opry

Singer Terri Clark , a raven-haired Canadian with a driving country sound, will become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry next month.

The 35-year-old received a surprise invitation during an Opry performance Saturday. When inducted June 12, she'll become the first female Canadian artist — and the third Canadian overall after Hank Snow and Stu Phillips — to join the venerable radio show.

"This is the epitome of everything I have existed for in this business and dreamed about as a kid," she said Wednesday in a phone interview from Seattle. "It was enough for me just to stand on stage with those people, and now to get to be a member is incredible."

Opry member Steve Wariner extended the invitation just after Clark finished performing her new single, "Girls Lie Too."

Wariner told her how much the Opry loved surprises, and that it had one for her. Then her mother, Linda Clark, who'd flown in from Alberta, Canada, walked on stage holding a sign that read "Grand Ole Opry, June 12."
