Manilow is doing well after hip surgery

08/31/2006 1:13 PM, AP
Adam Goldman

Barry Manilow was at his Palm Springs home in a wheelchair following hip surgery, but should be walking by the end of the week, his publicist said.

"Being in a wheelchair would naturally be the case two days after surgery," publicist Carol Marshall said Wednesday. "He's doing great. He's still on a high from winning an Emmy."

Manilow won an Emmy Award on Sunday night for outstanding individual performance in a variety or music program. On Monday, the 60-year-old singer underwent arthroscopic surgery on both hips at a Southern California hospital.

"He still has a good six weeks or so of physical therapy," Marshall said. Following his recuperation, Manilow plans to return to his Las Vegas concert schedule.

The singer had postponed the surgery to repair cartilage tears in both hips so he could attend the Emmys. He performed "Bandstand Boogie," the theme from Dick Clark's "American Bandstand," as part of a tribute to Clark during the show.
