Canadian pop singer Alanis
Morissette , on the campaign trail for her newly released album,
got an early 30th birthday gift from fans during a quick midday
concert at a Los Angeles shopping mall on Saturday.
Morissette, who said she was "very excited" to be joining
the thirtysomething crowd on Tuesday, was presented with a
giant card signed by some of the thousand-odd people who showed
up for the gig at the Grove, near Hollywood.
After everyone sang "Happy Birthday," Morissette responded
by singing "Thank U," the last tune on her five-song setlist.
Dressed in orange trousers, a black belly t-shirt and
fingerless gloves, she also performed three songs off her new
album, "So-Called Chaos," including new single "Everything."
Afterward, she signed CDs at a nearby book store.
The album, her fourth for Maverick Records, opened at No. 5
on the U.S. pop charts with sales of 114,500 copies, a 47
percent drop from the first-week performance of 2002's "Under
Rug Swept." The new album also debuted at No. 1 in Germany, No.
2 in Canada, No. 4 in Italy and No. 5 in France.
Morissette has appearances scheduled on "Late Night with
Conan O'Brien," "Good Morning America" and "The View" before
beginning a co-headlining U.S. tour with fellow Canucks
Barenaked Ladies in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio on July 13.
