Rare Bobby Darin Audio, Video Comes to Light

Barry A. Jeckell

A host of rare Bobby Darin recordings and performance footage make up the CD/DVD package "Aces Back To Back." Assembled with the help of the late artist's estate, the set is due Sept. 14 from Hyena Records.

Both discs feature songs from the early 1970s television variety series "The Bobby Darin Show," marking the first time the performances are being made commercially available. Along with several of his own songs, including "Beyond the Sea," highlights include covers of "Alone Again Naturally" and "Dream," the latter a duet with Petula Clark .

The audio disc features the fabled "Milk Recordings," collected from a daily, five-minute jazz vocal radio broadcast series sponsored by the American Dairy Association. Listeners will be able to hear Darin's renditions of "Blue Skies," "Moon River" and "All the Way" for the first time since those broadcasts.

Also included are renditions of Bob Dylan 's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and Tim Hardin's "If I Were a Carpenter," from an out-of-print live album. A pair of songs -- "Jive" and "Long Time Movin"' -- stem from out of print studio recordings released on Darin's own Direction record label. A demo of the song "Dream Lover" is also included.

The DVD is rounded out by black-and-white footage from a documentary that Darin was making about his own life that has never been seen outside of his estate. The clips are narrated by the late actor/comedian George Burns.

The set comes at a time of tremendous interest in Darin, who died of a heart ailment in 1973, aged 37. Last week, the Warner Strategic Marketing compilation "Beyond the Sea -- The Very Best of Bobby Darin" entered the U.K. album chart at No. 26, the artist's highest placing on the tally since "That's All" reached No. 15 in 1960.

Kevin Spacey will star as Darin in "Beyond the Sea: The Bobby Darin Story." Produced and directed by Spacey, the Lions Gate Films feature is scheduled to open Nov. 26 in U.S. theaters.
